Infinite Summer 2022: Dark Carbon Developer Interview

We got the exciting opportunity to talk with the developer working on an upcoming Sci-fi Action- Survival game Dark Carbon. They got to tell us more about this game, and we look forward to hearing more about it as we approach launch. Dark Carbon is in early development, so it is still shrouded in a little bit of mystery, but this interview sheds some light on the mysterious game. We also have a short roughly 22 second clip of some pre-alpha footage. This game is only about 2 months into development, so this is an exciting rare ultra early look into a game in its early stages. We as gamers rarely get to see games at this stage, as typically games in this stage only ever receive teasers or cinematic. This short clip, while simple, gives us a glimpse into the vibe and style of Dark Carbon. We know it will be a first person survival sci-fi game set on a dark and gloomy alien world. Even in this early stages, the sky, weapon design, and alien designs all excite us as we get to see this early conceptual world. Check out the official INFINITE SUMMER preview clip below, and scroll down for our Developer Interview!

GI:

What type of game is Dark Carbon, and what inspired you to build it? Are there any games you really enjoyed that gave you inspiration? What makes Dark Carbon stand out?

DEV:

Dark Carbon is a Sci-Fi Action-Survival game for PC, as a gamer myself I feel that we (the players) have no respect for the game that we are playing, we are entering the world with a sense of empowerment, knowing that we can go guns blazing on the first enemy in sight without any consequences, I want the players to feel dreadful and think twice before engaging with an enemy or consuming an item.

The actions that players will take in Dark Carbon will have permanent effect on their progression and I believe that will be what makes the game stand out the most.

Dark Carbon is inspired by many games I have played over the years, I don't want to categorize it as being inspired by a specific title, play it and decide for yourself what games it feels like.

GI:

How long have you/your team been developing [your game]? Is it just you or do you have a team?

DEV:

I am a solo indie developer, have been a game development hobbyist for almost a decade, DC will be the first game I release commercially. Dark Carbon is currently two months old out of it's one year expected development cycle.

GI:

Can you tell us a little bit about the lore and characters in the game? How did you go about building this world? What inspired your characters?

DEV:

A malfunction caused your ship to stir from its planned route and hyper-jump to an hostile alien planet full of dangers, gather resources to repair your ship, and return to Earth. When I say hostile planet I mean it, this planet and it's alien inhabitants will try to kill you and they will be very serious about it.

GI:

Can you give us a little bit of the context or backstory to the teaser eclipse image? What does it mean? What does the name mean and how does it impact the story?

DEV:

As the sun slowly reveals the planet and it's secrets, so will you slowly find out more about this alien planet and the dangers lurking within. Dark Carbon is a rare resource you will have to gather in order to fuel your ship and fly back to earth.

GI:

What is your greatest challenge being an indie developer? How do you overcome those challenges? What is your advice to developers who share those struggles?

DEV:

Game Development is expensive, both in time and money, being self-funded and developing the game while working and studying for my final exams, I find keeping up with the time costs to be the the most challenging. My advice for indie developers like myself is to give your game the respect it deserves, time and money wise, have a plan and stick to it no matter what. I also found studying practical software engineering to be extremely helpful in providing me the tools and knowledge I need to develop a game.

GI:

What can you tell us about the release window? You have it slated for 10/04/23. Is there going to be a demo or early access?

DEV:

I can say it's a very ambitious deadline, I planned the development cycle to last a year and currently I am sticking to this plan, that being said, DC is a large project and if it must delayed to be ready, it will. If all goes well, Dark Carbon will be released to Steam Early Access at 10/04/23.
