Top 5 Movies of 2023 - Best of 2023 Event

2023 was a great if not difficulte year for gaming and entertainment as a whole. While the IRL situations were not always positive, it still managed to deliver some incredible pieces of content. In a year of massive Box Office Flops, superhero fatigue, and overall blockbuster fatigue, I thought it was more important than ever to celebrate some great movies. For the first time, Game Infinite is introducing a Top 5 Films of of 2023 and Best Movie of 2023 categories. This list will have a bent towards adaptations and nerdy fandom, as is our DNA; but is technically open to all movies. I am ranking these films according to my enjoyment and critique. This is just my opinion, and we would love to hear your favorite films of the year!

5. Super Mario Bros

Super Mario Bros is way better than I expected. It is a fun and well told story, that FEELS like a big block buster movie, rather than just a long cut scene from the games. The production value, the faithful adaptation, the controversial casting decisions, all just WORK. I was impressed from start to finish as a life long Mario fan. My kid loved it as well in a moment of parental pride.

4. Air

I don't care about shoes. I don't care about sports. I don't even care about Nike as a company or brand. How on earth Ben Affleck and Matt Damon managed to make the most boring premise of a movie one of the best films of the year surprises me. This isn't even really a story of the immensely famous athlete Michael Jordan. This is a biopic about the people who designed his SHOE. This movie really doesn't make any sense on paper, but it is engaging and unexplainable.

3. Spiderman Across the Spiderverse

Spider-man Across the Spider-verse should have kept the "part 1" in it's name as my only criticism of the film is clearly is half of a movie, ending on a clear part 1 style cliff hanger. It has no resolution to it's story. That is fine if it named it so, but they did not. That naming critique aside, this film is a master piece of animation, leveling up over the predacessor

2. Gran Turismo

Gran Turismo is an incredible film in terms of visuals and classic historical biopic narrative. It connects with gamers and racing fans, but not so much that non-gamers can't enjoy the film. This can be taken as a "Game Adaptaion" or just a gaming unrelated historical story about racing. I was really impressed by this one, and definitely shouldn't be slept on.

Honerable Mentions: Oppenheimer, Elemental, Equalizer 3, GOTG3

Some honerable mentions, I enjoyed Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3. It was good. But I am just burnt out on the MCU, and James Gunn, and his teenager humor. Oppenheimer was one of my most anticipated movies of the year. It was a cultural phenomenon. It won lots of awards, broke records, and was generally widely considered a success. However, i was pretty disappointed. I love biopics and historical dramas, I wasn't going in expecting action and explosions. BUT the main draw of the film is the THREE HOUR build up to the trinity test, and I felt the cinematography of that explosion was very disappointing. The majority of the film is just board room / court room talking, and talking about things that had nothing to do with the making of the actual bomb. It's a weird narrative decision.

1. The Creator - Movie of the Year 2023

Christopher Nolan should learn how to portray the awe and fear of an atomic explosion by the makers of the best movie of the year, The Creator. In a year that gave us Oppenheimer, the Creator delivers the best mass explosion scenes I have ever seen in a movie.

I said in my review, that I could not understand at ALL how this movie was so slept on by viewers. This movie is Avatar with Robots. It's CGI is so good, that it looks like reality. This film contains characters that have some of the best CGI that one could easily think they just made real life Androids for this film. This film makes films with budgets three times the size look like Spy Kids 3D in comparison.

The story is incredible. The cinematography is 10//10. The visual effects are Avatar level.
