New Game Tuesday - May 2020

April 2020 has come and gone, and with is some of the best gaming time I've ever gotten. It's great to have this time to hit the backlog before my first child arrives here in May. I had the opportunity to completely play through Final Fantasy 7 Remake, an absolute master piece. Also, I've been playing through Witcher 3, and I'm almost done. I'm going to have Final Fantasy 7's review soon, and I am very excited for some of the releases to come in May. We are getting some really nice gems this month, on top of potential surprises. Geoff Keighley has rescued the Summer by announcing the Summer Game Fest, a 4 month season of game announcements, in game events, and demos. It is his way of organizing a replacement for E3, and all the other major game events cancelled. This event kicks off with Microsoft this week's Inside Xbox, so who knows what awesome content will be coming.
"New Game Tuesday" showcases some major game releases on the first Tuesday of the month! Scroll down to see if any of the major releases appeal to you!
1. Apex Legends Season 5
Release Date: 5/12
Platforms: Xbox One, PC, PS4
Developer: Respawn
Publisher: EA
Today we see more about Apex Legends Season 5. We know it launches on May 12 with a new character, Loba. Loba is a world famous thief, the same little girl we saw in Revenant's story trailer. Season 5 includes also a new special missions mode, that until the trailer launches we don't know much about.
2. John Wick Hex
Release Date: 5/5
Platforms: PS4, Xbox One, PC
Developer: Mike Bithell Games Limited
Publisher: Good Shepherd Entertainment
Imagine a one-man-army Xcom, and you have John Wick Hex. That description isn't even my own, but the developers described it this way. I will say that I would have liked to see a full fledged 3D action game for John Wick. Imagine the gameplay that would be possible in a full blown John Wick game. However, I remain optimistic for this unique approach to John Wick. It is a turn style RTS, in the vein of a Xcom game where you fight countless foes. I also got Superheat vibes in the way you fight in a very strategic way.
3. Saints Row 3 Remastered
Release Date: 5/22
Platforms: PC, Xbox One, PS4
Developer: Deep Silver
Publisher: Deep Silver
Boy do I remember Saint's Row 3. I had the collectors edition. I played it a lot and enjoyed the wacky open world, even more than the Grand Theft Auto games. I will call them out for having JUST released the original version on Nintendo Switch. It is kind of lame that they released it on Switch, perhaps people bought it as an excuse to play the game again, only to have a better version for other platforms just drop right after. If I had bought the Switch version, I would have been pretty upset.
4. Bioshock Collection on Nintendo Switch
Release Date: 5/29
Platforms: PS4, Xbox One, PC, *New on Switch
Developer: Irrational Games, 2K Marin, Blin Squirrel Games, 2K Australia Digital Extremes
Publisher: 2K Games
Bioshock is one of my top 10 all time games, and it has in my opinion the best ending in gaming history. I have never experienced anything quite like it. I've never played the first two, however, I definitely would love an excuse to the play the third one again. Anyone who hasn't finished Bioshock Infinite is definitely missing out, I implore you to buy it on your preferred platform and finish the game. The Mindblown emoji is real in Infinite.
5. man-eater
Release Date: 5/22
Platforms: PS4, Xbox One, PC
Developer: Tripwire Interactive, Blindside Interactive
Publisher: Tripwire Interactive, Blindside Interactive
I first heard of this game during the Game Awards 2019, and I just remember sitting their with my friend as we watched the premier, laughing at this ridiculous and awesome game concept. You literally play as sharks, in an open world shark game, terrorizing swimmers on the beach. I just can't wait to get my hands on this 2020 guilty pleasure. I doubt it will win any awards, but it is going to be a blast.
6. Minecraft Dungeons
Release Date: 5/26
Platforms: Xbox One, PC, PS4, Nintendo Switch
Developer: Mojang
Publisher: Xbox Game Studios
Do you like Minecraft? Do you like top down dungeon crawlers? Well Minecraft fans can look forward to a spin off title, Dungeons. Dungeons is pretty much what it sounds, with a top down dungeon crawler style game. I will say right away the building focus of Minecraft was something that never appealed much to me; however, early looks at Dungeon seemed like something fun. Being a Xbox Game Studio title means this game will be a day one launch title on Game Pass so it will be free to try for subscribers, and definitely something to check out.
7. Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive edition
Release Date: 5/29
Platforms: Switch
Developer: Monolith Soft, Monster Games
Publisher: Nintendo
Nintendo is bringing their famed Xenoblade Chronicles, remastered up for Nintendo Switch. I never played the Xenoblade series, but I have a friend that really enjoyed the sequel last year. I know this game has quite a following, and fans are overjoyed for having the first one on the mobile platform.
